"There is a time and place for everything under the heavens, a time to ... " (Ecclesiastes 3:6 KJV)
First, let me say what a privilege and honor it is to be in ministry with you at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church, here in beautiful Richmond, Indiana. You have all gone out of your way to make me feel welcomed and appreciated.
It is now the first of July and by the time you are reading this I will have been here for a month. Wow, the older I get the more I begin to understand the old adage that: “Time sure does fly by when your having fun!.” It was a saying that as a boy I often heard from my Grandfather’s lips and at the time I didn’t quite get what it was he meant. But, the older I get, the more I understand the truth found in my Grandfather’s words. July 1 makes the mid point of the year, which means all we have left is the second half of this year. Rolling out in front of us like a long bright ribbon winding out before us. New, fresh, six months, twenty-six weeks, 183 days, 4380 hours, 276,800 minutes and 15,768,000 seconds. Frightening isn’t it. When you look at it that way, it is kind of funny when you hear people say they don’t have time for things. We need to utilize our gift of this time to its fullest.
With God’s help and continued blessings this will be a time for new beginnings for Reid Church and for you and for me. I want to be bold enough to challenge each of you at this time to do something old and something new and different. First, I want you to pray for our church. I know many of you are going to say well, Joe I already do that! Yes, I know that is true but, I want you to really be very intentional in your prayers for the remainder of this year. Pray that we may all become one. One with each other, one with our goals for the church, one with our vision and one with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and one with our Lord Jesus Christ. I want you to do it everyday. Next, I want you to ask someone to come and join us for worship, maybe it is someone who you have known for years, maybe even a former member, maybe it is a neighbor, the grocery store clerk, your bank teller. Just smile, “I want you to come to my church this Sunday.” Offer to pick them up and take them home. Tell them that you are praying for them. And then do it - Pray for them! Finally, pray for yourself, pray for the courage to tell someone that you are a Christian and that it has made a difference in your life and has given you the means for the living of these days
I am convinced that in prayer we will find the answers, the people and the resources we will need for Reid, for each other, and for those whom we reach out to serve in this community called Reid.
Until next time, keep me in your thoughts and prayers and know I will be doing the same.
See you in Church!
Joe

PRESBYTERY MEETING SUMMARY June 2, 2010
A Photo Gallery
Whitewater Valley Presbytery 1100 W. 42nd St., Indianapolis IN 46208
“Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living waters.” ~ John 7:38.
LIVING WATERS OF HOSPITALITY
First Presbyterian Church, Muncie, showered commissiones with hospitality during the Presbytery meeting June 2. Rev. Ron Naylor welcomed commissioners and we were blessed by the presence of other staff and church members who participated in worship: Rev. David Jewett, associate pastor; Ms. Jihy Kim, cellist; Dr. Kirby Koriath, organist; Rev. Myung Ku Lee, associate pastor; Elder Bonnie McKenzie, soloist; Elder Carrie Jo Miller, commissioned lay pastor.
LIVING WATERS ROOT NEW MINISTRY
A joyful and important task of the Presbytery is to examine and approve Ministers of Word and Sacrament. The Presbytery sustained two examinations: Ms. Sarah Brouwer, Validated Ministry Lake Fellow, Second Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis, service of ordination June 27, 6:00 p.m.; Ms. Deborah Bowsher, First Presbyterian Church, Portland, whose ordination in Scioto Valley Presbytery and service of installation at Portland will be announced. Mr. Andrew Scales, a candidate, Indianapolis-Tabernacle, was approved to progress from inquirer to candidacy status as he completes his master of divinity studies.
LIVING WATERS OF WORSHIP AND SACRAMENT
Elder John Paulson, commissioned lay pastor, First Presbyterian Church, Greenwood, led the worship service. His message, “Can We Bottle Living Water?” reminded us of Jesus’ words in John 4:5-15, "…whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.” Rev. Melodie Wager, Muncie-St. Andrew, dismissed us with prayer for a bountiful lunch. Rev. Patricia Reid, honorably retired, led communion with the assistance of pastors and elders: Rev. Ed Dykstra and Elder Vrina Stebbins; Ms. Deborah Bowsher and Elder Julia Schwomeyer; Ms. Sarah Brouwer and Elder Ina Van Duyn and Elder Allan Thomas.
RIVERS OF LIVING WATERS
Three churches shared their rivers of living water stories with the Presbytery: Richmond-First, Rev. David Layman and Elder Guy Guthrie; Winchester-First, Rev. Cherie Isakson and Elders Judy Anderson, Norman Lee and Jane Passmore; and Fishers-New Hope, Rev. Steve Ebling and Elder Jay Beatty.
WE POUR OUT LIVING WATERS FOR THE LARGER CHURCH
The Presbytery commissioned our 219th General Assembly Commissioners: Rev. Oscar Clavel, Indianapolis-Tabernacle; Rev. Joy Goehring, Avon-Whitelick; Rev. Betty Griffin, Indianapolis-Immanuel; Elder Nancy Kriplen, Indianapolis-Second; Elder Tonya Paddock, First Presbyterian Church, Liberty and Elder Fabio Socarraz, Indianapolis-John Knox. Delegates participating in the NQR Vacation Bible School Blitz were commissioned. 100 delegates representing thirteen churches from Whitewater Valley Presbytery and one from Wabash Valley Presbytery will be in Mexico July 10-24. The national Presbyterian Youth Triennium at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana July 20-24 will welcome 56 youth, representing eight churches, from Whitewater Valley Presbytery. Rev. Douglas Kelly, Board of Pensions, highlighted the work of the Board of Pensions. The 2011 dues have not been determined.
THE CALMING WATERS OF OUR EVERYDAY WORKCOMMITTEE ON MINISTRY
We celebrated Rev. Carol Farr’s gentle and caring ministry, particularly in her role as a hospice chaplain. Carol was called to the resurrection May 12. We approved the honorable retirement of Rev. Alan McCraine, validated ministry chaplain, effective August 4, 2010 and the terms of call and received a report from the Sexual Misconduct Response Team of pastors/lay persons who attended required training. Certificates were presented to lay pastors commissioned to churches and other ministries: Lisa Crismore, Marcia Cline, Jim Dougherty, Sally Ann Earl, Donna Madewell, Sandra Martin, Carrie Jo Miller, John Paulson, Mick Saunders, Fabio Socarraz, Barry Sumner.
Coordinating Council – We gave thanks to the family of Elder Don Cripe, whose memorial gifts were directed to the Presbytery. Mr. Cripe was the 1975 Presbytery Moderator and a member of Orchard Park Presbyterian Church. A first read of the 2011 budget was presented with per capita interpreted in a creative skit by the Presbytery Players: Rev. Richard Baker, Rev. Betty Griffin, Rev. Gray Marshall and Rev. Kim Olson. Elections: Rev. David Jewett, Nominating Committee 2012 and Rev. Scott Shelton, Committee on Ministry 2011.
STREAMS OF GRACE FLOW IN LIVING WATERS
The Presbytery approved, with regret and continuing prayers, enabling actions that allow the Southport Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis, to be dismissed from the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Appreciation was expressed to the Presbytery team of Elder Eric Herzog, Rev. Galen Schwarz, Elder Gary Shaw, Rev. Barbara Sloop and Rev. Alan Thames for their faithful work and to the Southport representatives for their cooperation.
